MIT discovers that magical 3D printed smart materials can jump, crawl, and catch the ball

June 20 news, according to Forbes magazine reports, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have found a way to print deformed soft materials in 3D. To achieve this goal, mechanical engineer Xuanhe Zhao and colleagues developed a 3D printing ink that injects magnetic microparticles. These tiny particles made of the neodymium-iron-boron alloy are combined with silica nanoparticles and embedded in silicone rubber to increase elasticity.

The researchers then designed a 3d printer that contained an electromagnet. By moving the electromagnet during printing, researchers can continuously control the orientation of magnetic particles. The resulting 3D structure can form a variety of complex structures that can respond instantly and highly accurately to magnetic fields. These print structures can stretch, roll, jump, and even catch the ball.

In addition, because materials respond to magnetic field changes rather than direct contact, this means that they can be controlled remotely. Xuanhe Zhao said: "We think this technology will have a good application prospect in biomedicine. For example, we can put a structure around blood vessels to control the pumping of blood, or use a magnet to guide a device through the gastrointestinal tracts to collect images, extract tissue samples, remove plugs, or send certain drugs to specific locations. You can design, simulate, and then print to achieve a variety of functions."

In fact, Xuanhe Zhao and his colleagues have developed materials and methods of use that will allow them to be used more widely. They said: "We have developed a print platform and prediction model for others to use. People can design their own structure and attribute patterns, validate them with models, and print them to implement various functions. Through the structure, properties, and programming magnetic fields and other complex information, we can even print smart machines such as robots.
